Pizza in San Marco, From the Big Screen to Big Flavors
Pizza in San Marco, From the Big Screen to Big Flavors
Electric Dough Pizza Co. in the historic San Marco Theatre electrifies with cutting-edge flavors in an iconic setting.
For decades, any given day in San Marco, a walkable neighborhood across the St. Johns River from Downtown Jacksonville in Northeast Florida, probably meant strolling around San Marco Square, running errands, enjoying the shops, cafes and parks. On special days, when the marquee's latest release announced a film that called your name, you might have also taken in a show at the San Marco Movie Theatre.
Built in 1938, a scant 10 years after the first "talkie" debuted, the theatre opened during the golden age of cinema as a part of the Sparks Theatres chain. It was a place for dates, a place for families and friends to gather, a place to share the excitement of being entertained in the cool air conditioning, to tuck into a savory box of popcorn or a sweet treat and be entranced by the magic of a moving picture show on the big screen.

Inside the new theatre: 500 seats, and a projection room built for the latest equipment.
As time passed, and despite its prominence, the theatre was not immune to the challenges posed by the pressures of changing economics, streaming television and most recently, the worldwide pandemic. At the end of 2022 the theatre closed its doors for the last time and the property was sold. But as is often the case with movies, a sequel was already being written.

A New Direction With a Nod to History
In early 2024, local chef and restaurateur Tom Gray was in search of a space to house his new pizza concept, Electric Dough Pizza Co. The stars may have been working along with lady luck, when the vacant theatre space was unexpectedly available to lease. Sensing the opportunity was a once in a generation chance, he jumped!
Working with his design team, a primary goal was not only to renovate and modernize the building so it could serve generations to come, but also to honor the history and memories that were woven into the fabric of the community, and allow it to serve as a location to build new memories, whether it be for dates, friends, or families... just like the old days.
Electric Dough Pizza Co. debuted on June 11, 2025, nearly eighty-seven years to the day after the first movie lit up the screen at the theatre. Read more of the theatre's history on our about page.
A Special Place, a Special Pizza... and It Starts With the Dough
To say Chef Tom's passionate about pizza is an understatement! Each pizza starts with our handmade artisanal 36-hour fermented dough, baked in our imported Italian electric ovens and rectangular steel pans to create a light, airy crust with our signature crispy, cheesy edges.
We load each pizza corner to corner with fresh, quality toppings, so every bite is the best bite and there are "no bones." "Pizza bones" are the dry, leftover edges of crust that you just don't want to finish because they have no cheese, no sauce and no toppings. Our pizzas are pretty awesome, but don't take our word for it. Come and try them yourself!
We offer two sizes of pizza: Medium (6-piece / 8x8) and Large (10-piece / 8x12). The Medium feeds one as a meal, or two as a share with apps or salads. The Large is great for two to three. Gluten-free crusts are 12-inch ovals. We work hard to source wholesome "Better for You" ingredients that taste better because they are better.
Check out our menu with our own Electric Originals and Remixed Classics pizzas, plus soups, fresh salads, and appetizers. We serve a wide range of Tractor Beverages, which are organic, all natural and free of high fructose corn syrup.
Save room for dessert! We serve Villa Dolce Gelato with twelve rotating flavors (including sorbets, if dairy is not your friend). Want to dial it up a notch? Go for a gelato float or affogato with a shot of Lavazza espresso. More on the gelato page.
