Fabulous!!! Delicious pizza. The transformation from the theatre to the restaurant preserves the nuance of the theatre and updates it functionally and makes an inviting space to enjoy yourself. Will return!
- The Godfather Part II
attended the soft opening of Chef Tom Gray's new restaurant, Electric Dough Pizza. It was fantastic! The restaurant is in the old San Marco theater, and touches of old Hollywood are preserved throughout the establishment. It was fun to see the old movie projector in a place of honor. A developer could have bought the building and obliterated all traces of the historic theater, but Chef Gray respected it and gave it the remembrance it deserves. We had the Godfather II pizza: Genoa salami, soppressata, coppa, pepperoni, sausage, Parmesan, spicy Calabrian chili crunch and Ed's red sauce. This is a Detroit-style pizza; thicker crust, yet crispy and crunchy on the edges with a perfectly cheesy finish. It comes in medium, large, and gluten free if you prefer. Perfection! We started with the homemade pimento cheese appetizer served with slices of crispy, crunchy bread and celery. You know that nasty pimento cheese you may have been forced to eat as a kid? This is NOT that. It's smooth and creamy. We cleaned the plate. I added one of their yummy Tractor Company non-alcoholic juice drinks: watermelon mint with no added sugar. Sweet and delicious and hits the spot on a hot evening. Several flavors are available. Of course we had to finish up with a shared cup of gelato. It's the closest to the gelato in Italy we've ever had here in the states; sweet, creamy deliciousness. And we go to Italy yearly, so we feel well-qualified to be gelato judges . There's also a full bar and you can enjoy food in that area, too. Other diners were raving about the salads and meatballs, too. This place will quickly become a Jax favorite. You can quote me on that. And if you're from Detroit, you'll especially love this taste of home! PS: someone told me that he thought this was a paid review. I assure you it's not. I am a writer and my husband is a photographer, so this review may seem a bit more polished than some. All are valuable and valid.
